When it comes to finding a cure for cancer, NFCR believes in discovery-oriented scientific research - that in order to fully conquer this devastating disease, we need to study cancer at its most fundamental level and to unite the best minds in cancer research. Our approach is paving the way for better prevention strategies, earlier diagnostic techniques, and new anti-cancer drugs and treatments.
Our efforts are paying off. In just the past year, NFCR scientists have:
• Developed and optimized 15 novel research tools and technologies. Progress in this area is critical for improving anti-cancer drug screening, bringing new drugs to the marketplace, and improving cancer treatments.
• Identified 20 new drug candidates. All of these anticancer agents have the potential to become, and some will become, effective treatment options, improving on anything currently available. These potential cancer therapeutics will be further evaluated and developed in the coming year.
• Identified and characterized 9 cancer biomarkers. Further development of these characteristic molecules is crucial for early diagnosis and personalized treatment.
• Conducted 13 clinical trials to advance new drugs or new treatments from the laboratory research phase into clinical development.
• Identified and evaluated 2 dietary nutrients that may have potential therapeutic properties for use in cancer prevention and treatment.
• Published more than 236 research papers in international, peer-reviewed science journals that have made significant contributions to our understanding of the complex nature of cancer.
